Aggressive behaviour

Aggressive behaviour

Young people who exhibit aggressive behaviour often use their aggression to achieve a specific goal. To conceal their insecurity, for example, or to show power.

Teenagers and young adults who cope with aggressive behaviour have noticed that with the help of their aggression, they can get things done or that situations take a turn that is beneficial to them. If young people lose control, they think only of themselves and no longer take others into account.

Characteristics of aggressive behaviour

The aggressiveness can be external (externalised aggression, aimed at the young person's environment) or internal (internalised aggression, aimed at the young person himself). Externalised aggression includes vandalism, swearing, humiliation, arson, anger eruptions and/or bullying. Internalised aggression is characterised by various forms of self-harm (injuring oneself), such as scratching and cutting, and hitting walls or doors with one's head. Both forms can arise from unpleasant experiences from the past —a trauma, for example.

Treatment of aggressive behaviour

At Yes We Can Youth Clinics, we help young people, whom we call 'fellows', to deal with their problems and become empowered to function well in society again. We do not look at the 'labels' they have received in the past but rather at their talents, qualities and possibilities.

Recognition

An essential part of the treatment takes place in groups. During group sessions, the fellows set their personal goals under the supervision and guidance of expert-by-experience counsellors. They also think along with each other. There is a lot of recognition during these sessions since the fellows and the counsellors have (had) similar problems. The fellows work together on their recovery in an open atmosphere. Each fellow receives a workbook on 'the steps of change' that guides them through their treatment.

Types of treatment

During their stay at our clinics, fellows are engaged in daily sports and outdoor activities. They work together, push boundaries and put their goals into practice. Behavioural therapy and skills training are also used in the treatment of ADD. The fellows have several weekly one-on-one sessions with their regular therapist, who works closely with our other (care) professionals. This way, we always know how the fellows are doing and what they need. In addition, much attention is focused on the fellow's family through our family coaching and counselling programme.
